CNN analyst Scott Jennings chastised fellow panelist Bakari Sellers for his touch as the two clashed over President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign promise to help lower food prices.
During Thursday’s “Newsnight with Abby Phillip,” the former South Carolina Democratic representative and Jennings sparred over who was to blame for inflation and prices.
“During the campaign, Donald Trump said he was going to lower prices,” Sellers said, claiming Trump’s comments were a “lie.”
Sellers partially agreed with his conservative counterpart.
“One of the things we know is that Scott was actually 50% correct and that the Democrats didn’t do a good job of telling our story,” he said. “We didn’t do a good job of addressing the pain that Americans felt.
“One of the mistakes we made during the Biden presidency was that inflation was temporary,” Sellers added. “These things were not correct because there are people who were out there feeling the pain of the price of eggs.”
Then the 40-year-old’s behavior caused tension between the two men as they sat next to each other in the studio.
Sellers disagreed with Jennings and tried to be playful with his body movements, which the former George W. Bush administrator did not take lightly.
“What Scott wasn’t correct about, which sometimes happens around the table, though I know you want to be,” Sellers said as he grabbed Jennings’ arm.
“Don’t touch me,” Jennings warned.
Sellers turned around and placed his hand on Jennings’ back instead of listening to Jennings’ request
“I can’t touch you,” Sellers laughed as Jennings shook his head disapprovingly.
Host Abby Phillip repeated to all the panelists to “keep your hands to yourselves at the table” to stop the row escalating.
Jennings’ expression visibly changed as Sellers returned his hands to his side of the table.
The 47-year-old Republican sat back in his chair, crossed his arms over his chest and stared at Sellers, who had returned to his point.
Sellers argued that President Joe Biden’s policies were not responsible for inflation.
“Yes it is,” Jennings shot back. “Of course it is.”
Jennings mocked Sellers who began arguing with the remaining panel members.
“Of course, it’s not,” Sellers said, instead saying the inflation was caused by COVID. “You know what happened around the globe? You had rising inflation across the globe. Do you know who handled this issue? Joe Biden addressed this issue.”
“One of the things that Scott was right about again is that the Democrats didn’t label it: This is Trumpflation,” he added.
Trump’s election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris last month was due in part to his campaign on the economy, comparing inflation during his first term to when Biden took office.
“We didn’t have inflation and we had a very strong economy. And we’re going to do it again, but I think we’re going to increase it because now we have experience that we didn’t have,” Trump said Thursday as he rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange after being named the Times’ Person of the Year. .
Trump alluded to the awards that won him the election during a recent interview with NBC News.
“I won on the border and I won on groceries,” Trump told “Meet the Press.”
